Why Build a Custom Home in Piedmont
Piedmont grew up as a mill village on the shoals of the Saluda River, and the river still runs through the middle of the community. It's about 12 miles south of downtown Greenville, and I-85 exit 35 (SC-86) is just west of the center, so it works well for commuters while keeping its own small-town character.
Craft Homes builds custom homes throughout Piedmont, in both counties. For many people here, building means finally putting a new home on land they've owned for years, or on a lot close to family.
Building on Your Lot in Piedmont
With our On-Your-Lot program, we build on the land you choose. In Piedmont, the first thing to know is that the Saluda River is the county line:
- Two counties, one river: Anderson County is on one side of the Saluda and Greenville County is on the other. Each county has its own zoning and building permits, so the first step is confirming which side your parcel is on. We build on both sides.
- Older lots near the mill village: check the lot size, setbacks and utility connections, since many of these parcels were laid out long ago.
- Land near the river or creeks: look at flood zones, drainage and slope early on. We build on sloped and well-and-septic lots, and without sewer you need an SCDES septic permit before you can get a building permit.
Don't own land yet? We can help you look, and we're happy to coordinate with your realtor.

Designing for a River-Town Lot
Piedmont lots come in many shapes. Some are narrow parcels from the mill-village days, and others are wooded tracts on rolling ground near the river. A narrow lot may call for a two-story layout or a side-entry garage, while a sloped lot can be a chance to add a walk-out lower level or a deck among the trees. If you're building close to family, you might plan a guest suite or a main-level bedroom for parents. Whatever the site, we design the home around it so the house feels like it belongs where it sits.
How We Build Your Home
We start by learning what you need from the home and what your lot allows. Then we design it with you, choosing the layout, features and finishes. During the build, we keep you informed and involved through construction and the final walk-through. Our Williamston office is a short drive away.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which county is my Piedmont lot in?
It depends on which side of the Saluda River it's on. The river is the county line, with Anderson County on one side and Greenville County on the other. We build on both sides and can help you confirm your parcel's county.
Can you build on an older lot in Piedmont?
Often, yes. Older lots can have unusual dimensions or older utility lines, so we look at the site before design starts.
Is Piedmont convenient to Greenville?
Yes. It's about 12 miles south of downtown Greenville, with I-85 nearby.
